<B>1857-O $2 1/2 MS64 NGC.</B></I> This issue, from the last year of quarter eagle production at the New Orleans Mint, is scarce in AU and rare in Mint State. Only 34,000 coins were manufactured, about 20% of the emission in some previous years. As Garrett and Guth point out, collecting of coins by mintmark was all but unknown, and the existence of any Mint State example is nearly miraculous. If that is so, then this near-Gem coin is quite a miracle, boasting as it does pretty, pristine surfaces with considerable reflectivity and good eye appeal. The fields have prooflike tendencies. A bit of strike weakness can be seen on the lower beads in the hair cord and the curls below the ear, as well as on the eagle's left (facing) leg and right wing bottom, but this distraction is trivial, as the coin is essentially unimprovable.
