1857-O $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. A very rare and
1857-O<$2 1/2> MS63 NGC. A very rare and, for the most part, unappreciated Coronet quarter eagle. The mintage of 34,000 pieces is hardly impressive, but the attrition rate for this issue was extremely high. Seldom are examples located any finer than XF and we would estimate that no more than a dozen Mint State pieces are thought to exist. There are only a couple of higher graded pieces that have been seen by the major services. This is a solid Select Uncirculated piece that is also affordable for the collector who wishes to have a Mint State coin. The eagle's leg shows the diagnostic striking weakness common to all known '57-O quarter eagles. The obverse, however, is actually rather well brought up. The coin has bright yellow-gold color. There is an area of planchet roughness in the right obverse field and a dark toning spot on the top arrow on the reverse. These combine to limit the grade of this scarce, high grade O-mint quarter eagle. Census: 8 in 63, 1 finer (2/06).
