<B>1857-O $2 1/2 AU58 NGC.</B></I> An example from the last year of quarter eagle production at the New Orleans Mint, made at a time when collecting coins by mintmark was all but unknown: That practice would not take hold until the 1893 of Augustus Heaton's seminal <I>Mint Marks </B></I>reference. Accordingly 1857-O quarter eagles, produced to the extent of only 34,000 pieces, are rare and elusive in Mint State. This piece boasts a bold strike on the obverse, with some reverse weakness on the left (facing) eagle's wing.
