Faded mint red mellowing to steel brown with dark steel on the highpoints, a third of the faded red remaining on the obverse but only about 10% showing on the reverse. The fields are covered with the always present die polishing lines on both sides, but are free of hairlines or other contact marks. The fields are not as reflective as usually found on proof large cents of the 1840's and 1850's, but this variety always has the mirrors subdued by the fine die polishing lines previously described. The only defects on this piece, and they are trivial, are a tiny spot of dark toning near the dentils right of star 11 and another microscopic one near the dentils above the left side of star 6. EAC grade consistent with the slab grade. At the lower end of the condition census for this rare proof-only variety.
