1857 N-5 R5+ PCGS graded PR65 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. A sharp, gorgeous example of this proof-only Small Date variety. Lustrous electric blue steel and light chocolate with faded mint color covering the protected areas, mostly on the obverse. Nearly flawless. The only marks are a small spot of shallow carbon on the jawline over the throat, a microscopic speck of carbon between stars 7 & 8, and a speck of carbon on the rim under star 1. The reverse is absolutely pristine. The fields on both sides are covered with microscopic die polishing lines, as always on this variety, and the fields are not quite as reflective as those on other proof varieties from the 1840s and 50s. Our grade is Proof-64+, very close to Proof-65, and CC#3 in the Grellman census. PCGS population 7; 1 finer in 66RB. Only 238 minted. PCGS #2001. Estimated Value 10,000 - UP
