1857 H10C PR63 PCGS. The actual numbers of proof
<B>1857<H10C> PR63 PCGS.</B></I> The actual numbers of proof 1857 Half Dimes are not known today, so we are left to speculate about the number of surviving specimens based on the frequency of appearance, estimates of experts, and the population data. It appears that the 1857 Half Dime was one of the more populous proof issues struck just before the advent of commercial proof production in 1858. Some ten or more years ago, Al Blythe estimated that perhaps only 16-20 pieces might exist. However, we think probably twice that many actually be extant today based on the population data from NGC and PCGS. This is a deeply toned coin whose surfaces display cobalt-blue and antique-golden toning with considerable reflectivity from the fields evident through the rich, multi-layered patination. A few scattered hairlines are visible in the fields, thus accounting for the PR63 grade. Population: 7 in 63, 17 finer (6/05).
