1857 G$1 PR64 PCGS. The 1857 is rare in proof format, struck the year before larger production proof mintages began for other U.S. coins. The exact mintage of proof 1857 proof gold dollars is unknown, but it is presumably very small, as pre-1858 proof coins were distributed as singles not as sets, as in later years. It is believed that 8-10 separate proofs are known today. This is a deeply reflective example that shows significant (but unacknowledged) cameo contrast against the frosted devices. Indeed, a pronounced gold-on-black appearance is evident, especially on the obverse, when the coin is viewed from directly overhead. Pedigree identifiers include a slight streak of granularity in the lower left obverse field, a U-shaped lint mark below the T in UNITED, and a few other small lint marks in the right obverse field. A few wispy handling marks prevent the achievement of an even higher grade. This is a rare and important proof striking, as well as a rare opportunity for the specialist to acquire this seldom-seen gold dollar. Population: 4 in 64, 1 finer (10/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
