1857 G$1 MS67 PCGS. While the 1857 gold dollar is an available issue in lesser Mint State grades, better examples prove highly elusive. Garrett and Guth (2006) note that "Gem examples of this date are much rarer than later dates of the gold dollar series." The authors further note that aside from a small hoard of high-grade examples discovered in 1983, this issue has never been found in quantity.
Such facts only reinforce the desirability of this wonderful Superb Gem, a delicate beauty with soft, swirling luster and faint pink and green accents against the yellow-gold of the surfaces. Though the center of the date and the knot of the bow on the wreath show a touch of softness, the portrait is crisply defined. A gorgeous exemplar with practically flawless surfaces. Population: 5 in 67, 1 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
