Original 1857 James Buchanan Bronze Indian Peace Medal The First American Medal To Depict A Baseball Game !

(1857-Dated) James Buchanan Indian Peace Medal. Bronze, 76 mm. First Size. By Salathiel Ellis and Joseph Willson (but lacking their names). Julian IP-34. NGC graded Mint State-64 Brown.

Julian IP-34 (First Variety). 76 mm. Dies By Salathiel Ellis and Joseph Willson. This medal has rich, near perfect mahogany-brown color with glossy hard surfaces. The central high relief details are exceptional and provide excellent eye appeal. It certainly must have taken several strikes to bring up the full detail of this medal. This is one of the few Indian Peace Medals that was not plated in Julian’s book and this is only the third Bronze example we’ve handled of this number in Bronze. The appearance of this rare bronze variety should create considerable excitement, along with the fact that it is the first American medal to depict a Baseball game being played. The border presents a graphic Indian scalping scene, quiver, bow, and hatchet. The central design shows an Indian in incongruous feather headdress plowing, while in the background holds baseball game in progress, along with a church, cabin and steamboat. A very rare major type that is missing in most collections. This popular and historic medal is handsomely housed in its special, 7.25” x 5.75” custom NGC Certification display type holder.
