1857-D G$1 MS62 PCGS. Winter 9-K, the only known dies. This coin was previously offered as lot 7629 in our August 1999 sale of the Chestatee Collection, where it was described as: "An outstanding strike for the issue with both sides showing far better detail than usual. Medium hazy orange-gold color can be seen on the obverse and the reverse. A few light marks are noticeable to the right of and below the 7 in the date. The quality of the planchet is excellent and this is aesthetically one of the finest 1857-D Gold Dollars we have seen. "The 1857-D is, along with the 1850-D, the most undervalued Dahlonega Gold Dollar. It is scarce in the lower AU grades and it becomes rare in properly graded AU 55 to AU 58. In full Mint State, the 1857-D is very rare, with probably no more than six or so known survivors. "The current Condition Census for the 1857-D Gold Dollar is as follows: 1. Duke's Creek Collection, Ex: Eliasberg: 36 (Bowers and Ruddy, October 1982); Clapp; Rawson Sale (B. Max Mehl, November 1922). Graded MS62 by PCGS. 2. Chestatee Collection. Graded MS62 by PCGS. 3. California collection, Ex: Doug Winter/Lee Minshull 12/98. Graded MS61 by PCGS. 4. A coin graded MS62 by NGC. Location and pedigree unknown. 5. New York collection via Doug Winter, Ex: Superior 2/99: 1685; Far Rockaway Collection; Doug Winter 11/96. Graded MS61 by PCGS."The coin realized $10,063 in that sale. From the Ashland City Collection.
