1857-D<G$1> MS61 PCGS. Variety 9-L. A luminous apricot-gold representative of this scarce Dahlonega issue. The surfaces are surprisingly undisturbed for the MS61 grade. A solitary vertical slide mark on the neck, visible only beneath a lens, helps determine the grade. Moderate striking softness, not uncommon for the issue, affects the wreath bow, the O in DOLLAR, and the 5 in the date. The curls beneath LIBERTY, and the left peak of the crown, are also somewhat soft. Delicate clash marks outline the devices and are typical for the era and denomination. D-mint type collectors know that the Type Three gold dollar is harder to secure than its Type One predecessor. A mere 3,533 pieces were struck. Population: 6 in 61, 5 finer (3/06).
