1857-D<G$1> AU58 NGC. Variety 9-L. A pleasing coin at first glance, appearing unworn and with light Cameo contrast. Under a loupe, only light rub is noted, and the surfaces are pleasing for this issue. According to Doug Winter's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861, the 1857-D is much rarer than the 1858-D and 1859-D gold dollars, even though it is valued comparably. This issue is frequently found poorly struck. The strike on the present example is weak on both the headdress and the hair, but the color is a delightful green-gold, and there are no major scrapes or abrasions. The obverse shows numerous hairlines and field chatter under a glass, but the cheek of Liberty is surprisingly clean. Both dies are heavily clashed, and the reverse shows parallel raised segments on both sides, in this case heaviest outside the wreath, that are characteristic of this issue. The date, denomination, and mintmark are all bold, with a pleasing amount of wreath detail. In spite of the numerous condition qualifiers on this coin, it retains a considerable amount of that most elusive of ingredients, eye appeal. Census: 28 in 58, 12 finer (12/05).
