<B>1857-D $5 XF45 NGC.</B></I> Variety 34-CC. This example saw definite circulation, which is not surprising. According to Garrett and Guth (2006): "Like the 1856-S half eagle, the 1857-S saw extensive use in the daily commerce of the California Gold Rush. Most of the coins that have survived are well circulated." This coin is evenly worn and displays dark-green verdigris that nestles within some of the protected regions.
