1857-D<$2 1/2> MS62 PCGS. Variety 20-M, the only known dies. In the second edition of his book on Dahlonega Mint gold coinage, Doug Winter speculates that a small hoard of high grade 1857-D Quarter Eagles may have existed at one time. This is not to suggest that the '57-D is common in Mint State, for no D-mint gold issue can rightly be described as such. In reality, the 1857-D Two-and-a-Half is rare in grades above the AU level with Winter estimating that a mere 8-10 coins are extant in the various Uncirculated grades.
Typically well struck for the issue, both the obverse and the reverse abound in boldly delineated features. There is also quite a bit of sharp detail in evidence, perhaps most noticeably over the obverse star centrils. Green-gold and orange-gold hues compete for dominance as the coin rotates under a light, with none of the angles revealing any abrasions of singular note. Pedigree concerns compel us to mention a short scrape in the reverse field below the D mintmark. Winter lists four MS62 PCGS examples in his Condition Census listing for this issue, one of which may be the present example.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
