1857-D $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Winter 20-L. Not only was the quantity of D-mint production increased following its low point of 874 pieces in 1856 to 2,364 coins in 1857, but the quality of production saw a dramatic improvement as well. The highpoint detail of this carefully preserved yellow-gold example is quite bold throughout and only occasional mushiness on the denticles provides any indication of the previous year's deficiencies. Although one of the lowest mintage Dahlonega Quarter Eagles, the 1857-D ranks 17th (out of 20) in terms of condition rarity. Even so, the number of nice Mint State survivors fails to reach double digits. The present example, boasting vibrant Mint luster and the aforementioned sharpness easily merits a Condition Census rating. Population: 2 in 62, 1 finer (10/02). From the Ashland City Collection.
