1857-D $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Winter 20-L, the only known dies. Typically struck for the issue, the surfaces are uncommonly well defined for a D-mint Quarter Eagle from this era with only minimal softness of definition in select areas around the reverse periphery. The color is a rich reddish-gold shade that adequately conceals many of the smaller abrasions. There are, however, some moderate distractions on the obverse over Liberty's chin and in the left field that help to explain the MS61 designation. Nevertheless, this is an important survivor of a low mintage issue that is typically offered no finer than AU53. Like the MS62 NGC example that we are also offering in this sale, this MS61 PCGS representative qualifies for Condition Census standing. Our August 1999 sale of the Chestatee Collection included a similarly graded '57-D Quarter Eagle that realized $10,350. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
