<B>1857-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC.</B></I> Variety 20-M, the only known dies. A thin die line connects the right tip of the digit 5 to the bust truncation, a diagnostic of this obverse die. The reverse has a large D mintmark centered above the tip of the fraction bar, and joined to the branch stem. Although not as rare as the 1855-D or 1856-D quarter eagles, the 1857-D is a low-mintage issue that is rare in Mint State grades. This issue was produced in much higher quality than the previous two years. It has sharp design features on both sides with frosty luster and attractive lemon-gold color.
