1857-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 20-M. The 1857-D has a frugal emission of 2,364 pieces, and judging from third party populations, only a small fraction of that production has survived to this day. This straw-gold Dahlonega quarter eagle has unblemished surfaces and a sharp obverse strike. Softness on the reverse is generally limited to the eagle's neck and right (facing) claw. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive. An old hobby envelope with the pencil notations "1857d 2.50 ex f was proof?" accompanies the lot. Population: 14 in 55, 29 finer (1/07).
From The Stecher Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
