1857-C G$1 AU58 NGC. Winter 10-L, the only known dies. Considerable mint luster still adheres to both sides of this lightly worn survivor. Warm orange-gold highlights decorate otherwise olive-gold surfaces. Although not abrasion-free, this coin is free of sizeable or singularly distracting blemishes. The wavy appearance of the fields at the upper obverse and (to a lesser extent) lower reverse borders is a Mint-made defect that is seen on most survivors of this conditionally scarce date. The 1857-C (13,280 pieces produced) is typically offered in either VF or XF grades with Winter describing AU58 examples as "extremely rare." This is a mid Condition Census example. From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
