1857-C G$1 AU50 PCGS
1857-C G$1 AU50 PCGS. The 1857-C is one of just two Type Three gold dollars produced at the Charlotte mint and it is an issue that still does not receive the "props" it deserves. The present example is quite well struck for the date with just about all of the details on both the obverse and reverse completely visible. The obverse is actually far sharper than usual with much of Liberty's hair almost complete, particularly around the face and ear. The surfaces are lightly marked but do show scattered hairlines from an old cleaning. There are also a few mint-made obverse planchet flaws near the portrait, as seen on many examples of the 1857-C. There is also some light haziness on the surfaces with mottled reddish-gold color below. This coin has the details of an AU55 but it appears to have been net graded by PCGS.
The 1857-C is tied for fifth rarest Charlotte gold dollar but it is the third rarest in high grades. Of the 125-175 pieces that are known around two to three dozen are in AU. Just two or three true Uncirculated pieces are known, and the last coin graded Uncirculated that was offered for sale was Heritage 6/04: 6172, an NGC MS61 that realized $13,800.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
