1857-C $5 AU55 PCGS. Nicely impressed for the date with both the obverse and the reverse showing nearly full detail in the centers; the borders are just a bit weak as always seen. There are two noticeable marks on the obverse. The first is a fairly deep cut that can be seen in back of the eye; the second is a long, thin horizontal mark in the left obverse field. The reverse is clean and choice. Almost no actual wear can be seen and the luster is frosty and undisturbed. Both sides show nice, rich orange-gold color with a hint of rose seen on the reverse. This color appears to be totally original and this coin has not been dipped or processed. Despite the aforementioned marks on the obverse, this is a nice coin and it would might well upgrade if resubmitted as it has the body and appearance of an AU58 to MS60. Housed in an old PCGS holder.
The 1857-C is among the more common half eagles from this mint, making it a good date for type purposes. There may be as many as 200-250 pieces known but many grade below AU. Around four dozen are in the various AU grades and there are as many as a 10 to 12 coins in Uncirculated. Interestingly, nearly all of the Uncirculated pieces grade MS60 to MS61, and this date is exceedingly rare in MS63 or better. The finest known is the Elrod coin which now seems to be in an NGC MS65 holder (it was graded MS64 by NGC when last sold by Heritage as lot 4797 in the 2003 FUN auction). The second finest is the Milas coin that is now graded MS63 by PCGS.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
