1857 C-1 R2 MS63
1857 C-1 R2 MS63. Glossy medium chocolate and light steel brown with at least a third of the slightly faded mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. The notable marks are a thin diagonal pre-striking planchet void left of star 9, a speck of dark toning under star 2, and a vertical swipe of planchet chips passing down through the center of the reverse (caused by debris on the die). This area of shallow planchet chips is toned dark bluish steel and olive while the remainder of the reverse is covered with faded mint color. The contrast in color stands out and can be used to quickly identify this piece. MDS. The fields are satiny from microscopic radial die flowlines. Noyes photo #74325.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
