<B>1857<50C> PR64 PCGS.</B></I> Less than 25 proofs are known today of this rare issue. The Breen proof <I>Encyclopedia</B></I> comments, "Except for the small cent, probably the most difficult denomination of the year." These pieces were, of course, made in the year before the Mint began publicly and widely marketing proof coinage for sale to the public at large. The present example boasts good luster radiating from beneath moderately patinated amber, blue, and russet surfaces. Population: 9 in 64, 1 finer (9/06).
