1857<50C> PR63 PCGS. The 1857 is an important, early proof Seated half that was struck the year prior to the larger commercial mintages that began in earnest in 1858. The proof quantity issued of the 1857 has been estimated at 50 pieces, although the number of proofs extant, according to Wiley and Bugert in their 1993 The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars, is less than 25 coins. PCGS and NGC combined have certified about 60 examples, and our auction records indicate that fewer than 40 specimens have appeared through the major houses over the past 20 or so years. Taking into consideration grading service resubmissions and auction reappearances, the number of surviving 1857 Proofs is probably in the 30 to 35 range. The present specimen is a deeply mirrored coin that has streaky smoky gray patina with cobalt-blue and lavender peripheral coloration, and sharply struck design elements. Close examination reveals a few wispy hairlines, and a minute as-made lint mark in the right (facing) obverse field. Housed in a first generation PCGS holder. Population: 14 in 63, 9 finer (8/05).
From The Ken Arnold Collection.
