1857 50C MS65 NGC. With a sizeable (for the era) original mintage of 1.9 million pieces, the 1857 is an understandably plentiful coin in circulated grades. Mint State survivors, however, are remarkably scarce. One of precious few survivors graded MS65 at NGC and PCGS, this coin is richly toned in antique-copper, cobalt-blue, lavender-gray, and golden-orange colors. The texture is fully frosted, but the strike is a little blunt around the obverse periphery and over the eagle's left (facing) leg on the reverse. Some small and moderate abrasions are noted on Liberty's portrait and in the right obverse field. Both major grading services report 13 examples in MS65 with just four (all at NGC) finer (10/02).
