1857 $5 MS64 ICG. The Philadelphia Mint's output of 98,188 Half Eagles in 1857 is generous for the era, but this issue is an underrated condition rarity in grades above the XF level. To the best of our knowledge, the 1857 is unknown as a Gem in today's hobby. NGC has not seen a single coin above MS63, and an MS64 coin is the finest at PCGS (7/02). The present ICG-certified near-Gem easily qualifies for Condition Census standing. The frosty textured, orange-gold surfaces are free of all but a few abrasions, none of which are individually distracting. The strike is razor sharp in all areas, and the eye appeal is expectantly strong for the grade. This is the first Choice BU 1857 Five that we have offered in at least ten years. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
