1857 $20 MS64 NGC. Quite simply, this is a remarkable 1857-P Liberty Double Eagle. The surfaces are extraordinarily well preserved for the issue with only a few wispy grazes and abrasions scattered about. The luster quality is also impressive with a softly frosted finish providing modest, yet appreciable cartwheel effects as the coin rotates beneath the light. Olive-gold undertones backlight rich orange-gold coloration. All design elements are sharply impressed, and the surfaces are free of the as struck planchet flaws that usually plague representatives of this P-mint delivery. The only survivor graded MS64 at NGC and PCGS, and most readily identifiable by a tiny reeding mark in the right reverse field. There are no coins certified finer (1/03). The 1857-P was produced in fewer numbers than the 1857-S (439,375 pieces and 970,500 pieces, respectively), and the popularity of the latter issue as a type coin further benefits from the distribution of examples from the treasure of the S.S. Central America. Conversely, the '57-P is an underrated rarity in high grades. Mint State coins number only 20-30 pieces (per Winter, 2002), the vast majority of which grade either MS60 or MS61. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
