1857<$20> AU58 NGC. Since the S.S. Central America was traveling from West to East, there were few (if any) Philadelphia Mint coins in the treasure, and this issue remained unchanged in rarity. Even 23 examples of this date found in the S.S. Republic treasure did little to change its importance. Winter and Crum regard this issue as a common date in grades up to AU50, but a scarcity in higher AU grades and an outright rarity in Mint State grades.
When examining and considering this coin, keep the follow in mind: this issue is typically seen with a below average strike, nearly every known example has deep and distracting marks, and this date has below average eye appeal. These descriptive comments are typical of the issue, according to Winter and Crum. Now take a look at this particular specimen: it is sharply struck with only a couple stars showing any weakness, it has a few scattered abrasions, but no marks of any kind that can be considered deep or distracting, and it has frosty luster with brilliant yellow-gold color and excellent eye appeal.
From The Wyoming Collection.
