1857 1C PR65 PCGS. PR2. Despite a paltry original mintage of perhaps 50 coins, the proof 1857 Flying Eagle Cent is known in three different die varieties. The reverse die used to strike the present Gem is the same that the Mint used to produce 1856 proofs of the Snow-2 variety. Although some 1857 PR2 coins are questionable as proofs, the present example is undeniably a specimen striking. The definition is razor sharp throughout, and the fields reveal appreciable, if modest brightness. Both sides display warm, honey-tan coloration that further accents the virtually blemish-free features. We would not even mention a tiny lamination (as struck, and only visible under a loupe) at the C in AMERICA were we not concerned with establishing the pedigree of this rare copper-nickel proof. We last offered a PR65 PCGS example of this issue as lot 5065 in our April 2002 Central States Signature Sale. That coin realized $36,455.
