1857<1C> PR64 NGC. Some of the proof diagnostics are very weak, such as the die file mark above I in UNITED, and the die scratch that slants down to the right from the eagle's beak, but they are both discernible under light magnification, and the coin is definitely a proof. Probably no more than 50 to 100 proofs were produced of this issue, according to Rick Snow and Dave Bowers, but we feel obliged to note that the Guide Book of United States Coins (The Red Book) lists a proof mintage of 485 pieces. The fields are mildly reflective and the design elements are, surprisingly, softly struck on ITED STATES, the eagle's tail, and the reverse leaves and bow knot. The devices show a bit of light mint frost which provides the coin with a slight cameo contrast. On the basis of scarcity, this near-Gem example represents a significant opportunity for the Flying Eagle cent specialist. Census: 17 in 64, 5 finer (5/06).
