1857 1C PR64 NGC. Snow PR-3. Doubled Die Obverse 4-O-I
1857<1C> PR64 NGC. Snow PR-3. Doubled Die Obverse 4-O-I. A very rare and sought-after proof coin which has seen strong demand for many decades. The surfaces of this Choice Proof are free of all but tiny flyspecks, and the color is a pleasant tan with traces of coppery-yellow. Boldly executed by the dies as expected for a proof, with reflective fields and crisp definition on the devices. We note a couple of very minor lint marks for identification purposes, including one hanging off the left lower serif of the A in STATES and another on the dentil behind the uppermost tail feather of the eagle. A couple of planchet flakes are found, one near fifth dentil left of the 1 in the date, the other over the 85 in the date. On the reverse there is a lint mark in the field above the upper left portion of the wreath, and another lint mark crosses over the E in ONE. Lint marks are very common on proof coinage of this period, as the dies were wiped with a cloth as coins were struck and even a tiny thread left on the dies would make an impression on subsequent coins struck. Population: 17 in 64, 4 finer (9/05).
