1857 1C MS66 ICG. Doubled Die Obverse. FS 1C-002, Breen-1928, Snow-4. The importance of the die marriage aside, this is a very appealing coin with smooth, satiny surfaces that more than uphold the validity of the designated grade. The otherwise medium tan features yield to sprays of pale orange tinting on the obverse that further enhance the already memorable eye appeal. Both sides are razor sharp in striking detail and, since the eagle's wingtip is sharp, this coin is most likely an early die state. (Snow-4 was struck from an obverse die prepared from a defective hub that was missing this wingtip; a Mint employee repaired this feature by hand.) The obverse doubling is readily evident under magnification and it is perhaps most impressive over the eagle's eye, the U in UNITED, and the first S in STATES. Writing in 2001, Rick Snow states that "the finest known [1857 Snow-4 Cent] is a MS-66 graded by ICG," a statement that probably refers to the present representative.
