1857 1C MS65 NGC. Type of 1856. FS-001, Snow-2. The Type of 1856 is most easily distinguished from the Type of 1857 by looking at the O in OF. On coins of the former hub variety, the center of that letter is square, while on examples of the latter hub variety it is round or oval. At least six dies are known of this hub variety, one of which (Snow-1) displays repunching on the date. The remaining five obverses are grouped collectively under the Snow-2 attribution. Rick Snow (2001) believes that the Mint prepared these obverse dies in 1856, but left them undated until 1857. This belief forms the basis for his theory that the 1857 Type of 1856 may have been the first regular issue small Cent in U.S. history. A popular variety among specialists, coins from the Snow-2 dies are more conditionally challenging that those from the Snow-1 die. The present Gem may be the MS65 NGC example that Snow states is the finest known survivor of the Snow-2 variety. Warm copper-tan color dominates the outward appearance of both sides, but there are some lovely pastel tinged highlights in champagne and lilac colors. The surfaces are boldly, if not sharply impressed with minimal carbon. A tiny distraction in the obverse field arcs from the top of the eagle's left (facing) wing toward the D in UNITED--it is the only worthwhile pedigree marker.
