1857 1C Flying Eagle PR64 Cameo PCGS. Snow-PR3, Double
1857<1C> Flying Eagle PR64 Cameo PCGS. Snow-PR3, Doubled Die Obverse. Die doubling is noted on the U in UNITED. According to official Mint records, 485 proofs were struck of this issue. Most were apparently unsold and melted, or released into circulation, as only a small fraction (perhaps fewer than 50 pieces) of the original number survive today as recognizable proofs. This specimen was produced from one of three proof dies known for the 1857 Flying Eagle, being characterized by a bold die file mark out of the denticles above N in UNITED to the top of the eagle's head, with remnants that slant downward into the obverse field below the eagle's beak. Both sides display frosted devices and even golden-tan toning, with tinges of red-gold color seen about the obverse border.
