1857 1C Flying Eagle PR64 Cameo PCGS. Snow PR-1. It is curious that three sets of dies were used to strike proofs for this date, especially given the small number of pieces that are known today. This coin is from the first die pairing and one diagnostic is a die file mark from the left serif of the top of the I in UNITED to the rim. Also, the eagle's mouth is open, and there is a barely visible die scratch that slants down below the eagle's beak. This is a spectacular proof striking. The fields are deeply reflective and the devices are moderately frosted, giving the piece its cameo contrast. The original "white" surfaces have toned only slightly with a lovely pastel iridescence in the fields that turns red around the margins.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
