1857 1C Flying Eagle Cent--Obverse Clashed with 50 Cent Dies--MS65 PCGS. FS-003, S-9. This is one of the "strange occurrences" coins that came out of the Mint in 1857. The obverse is die clashed with the obverse of a Seated Liberty half! The heaviest part of the clash is through the word AMERICA but portions of the Half Dollar design can be made out elsewhere in the fields. Most believe that young Theodore Eckfeldt was responsible for this and several other mysterious die clashings on 1857 cents. The surfaces are bright and lustrous with a notable amount of golden-reddish patina, particularly over the obverse. Somewhat softly defined on each side, this is probably one of the finest preserved examples of this elusive error.
