1857 $1 PR65 NGC
1857 $1 PR65 NGC. Although proof mintages prior to 1858 are lost to today's collectors, Bowers (Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, 1993) estimates an original mintage of 50-100 pieces for the proof 1857 Seated dollar, and claims the issue is "more available than the 1855, but scarcer than the 1856." He also warns that many prooflike 1857 business strikes masquerade as proofs. This example shows faint evidence of the diagnostic "beard" below Liberty's chin, assuring the NGC attribution. This is a conditionally rare member of a very scarce issue, the NGC Census Report reveals 4 in PR65, with just 4 examples finer (1/08). Neither side reveals a conspicuous handling mark, and the finish shows faint cameo tendencies over the devices and legends. Pinpoint detail is seen on all the design elements, and the surfaces show gray-rose toning in the centers with cobalt-blue around the margins. Census: 4 in 65, 4 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
