1857 $1 MS64 NGC. Circulated examples of the 1857
1857$1 MS64 NGC. Circulated examples of the 1857 Dollar, (94,490 pieces struck), while scarce, are not as rare as those of the 1854 and 1855 issues. In Mint State the 1857 is also more easily obtainable, being one of the more common Seated Dollars from the 1850s along with the 1853. Of course, neither of these dates are anywhere near as common as the 1859-O, and NGC has seen just 16 1857 examples in MS64 with 2 finer (2/05). Like many Mint State 1857 Dollars extant, this coin exhibits a partial prooflike finish and an uneven strike that is particularly soft around the obverse periphery. The latter feature was caused by non-parallel die alignment. There are also areas of roughness from an unfinished die at the left and right bases of Liberty's rock. Both sides are bright and essentially untoned. A shallow mark in the obverse field between stars 12 and 13 is the most useful pedigree marker.
