1856 Same obverse as BG-227, further repolished; R punched too high, then corrected. Another Nouizillet production. Extremely Rare; a mere 11 recorded specimens (probably including duplication), though another example, holed, was sold on eBay in 2007. Finest Known Plate Coin, first edition, Breen-Gillio, California Pioneer Fractional Gold. The finest known example: "Brilliant Gem Prooflike Uncirculated," Deep mirrored surfaces. per Walter Breen, 1983; graded "MS-65, Prooflike," by Bowers and Merena, 1992. Hugely undergraded by PCGS! PCGS MS63. Ex Bowers and Merena Texas 1/10/1992, Lot 4152, ex Brownlee, ex Superior Lee and Shaffer Collections 9/25/1998, Lot 39, ex Lee Collection. A choice, pedigreed example, easily and far superior to the March, 2010 Baltimore auction specimen rated MS63. The duplication mentioned in BG is obvious, such that the 11 known specimens (including duplication) is probably much closer to six different pieces. Perhaps someday, collectors will hold a forum and bring together all the unknown examples for comparison. Serial# 26703079 Totheroh Collection HKA#63513
