<B>1856-S $3 AU58 PCGS.</B></I> Medium S. Unlike higher gold denominations, San Francisco three dollar pieces were never struck in large quantities. The high water mark was reached in 1856, with only 34,500 pieces coined. East Coast collectors were distant from the gold rush economy of San Francisco, so few pieces were set aside, and near-Mint examples are very scarce. This partly lustrous representative has minor wear on Liberty's tresses, and the left obverse field is moderately abraded.
