1856-S $10 AU58 PCGS. Medium S. Pale olive-gold t
1856-S<$10> AU58 PCGS. Medium S. Pale olive-gold toning. Much frosty luster still survives around the design elements and at the borders. The 1856-S is regarded as rare in all grades of condition; indeed, David Akers wrote back in 1980 that "only a few that grade as high as AU are known." Fortunately for the present generation of numismatists, a few additional examples of the issue were part of the fabulous treasure recovered in the underwater excavation of the famous steamship the S.S. Central America, although there is no indication that the piece offered here is from that source. It is perhaps worth noting that the vast majority of the 1856-S dated gold pieces recovered from the S.S. Central America, and subsequently offered at auction, are double eagles. Population: 12 in 58, 6 finer (5/05).
