1856-S $1 Gold Indian NGC MS61
Mintage: 24,600. A lovely specimen, nicely struck for the grade with smooth, even-flowing luster. The last year of this famous and somewhat anachronistic design. The Type II had been discontinued at the eastern mints, but was produced in 1856 only at San Francisco, as here.

The obverse is generally well struck, with excellent detail in Liberty's hair and the ostrich feathers of her plumes, including the puff-out tips. The fields are smooth rather than billowing with frost, and under high magnification are seen typically grainy or matte. The reverse is an excellent strike as well, and with similar luster. The S mintmark is double cut, as typical, which were it from one of several reverse dies would be a variety unto itself. The dedicated gold dollar collector will find this to be an important opportunity. Certainly it is one of the few Mint State examples we have had consigned over the years. (#7536)
