1856 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-183, Pollock-217, High R.7, PR61 PCGS. Snow-4d. Low Leaves Reverse, Open E in ONE. Struck in nickel alloy (75% copper, 25% nickel) with a plain edge. According to Rick Snow in his Flying Eagle and Indian Cent Attribution Guide, 2nd Edition, Volume 1, 1856-1858 (2001), only three to four examples are known of S-4d. For S-4 in all metals is likely Low R.5. The die pairing is unusual since the Low Leaves reverse was not introduced until 1858. Clearly, the present piece was struck in 1858 or later to satisfy collector demand. Great care was not taken by the mint, however, since the strike is soft on the eagle's head and neck, as well as on ONE CENT and the upper left cotton leaves. A few wispy marks cross the reverse center, but this rare 1856 Flying Eagle cent is otherwise unblemished.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
