1856-O 50C MS65 NGC
1856-O 50C MS65 NGC. Recut 6. WB-104. Writing in 1993, Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert state that the 1856-O is a "common" No Motto issue in the Seated Half Dollar series. We caution bidders, however, that most extant examples are circulated to one degree or another. Even those Mint State coins that are available to today's collectors are apt to grade no finer than MS64. This conditionally rare Gem is originally toned with the obverse displaying dappled cobalt and charcoal outlines to the borders and devices while antique-copper hues dominate the outward appearance. The reverse, on the other hand, exhibits a base of slate-gray color with freckled charcoal and cobalt overtones. Direct angles also reveal lighter undertones, particularly on the obverse, but there are no outwardly distracting abrasions. A sharply struck representative of a variety that Wiley and Bugert assign an R.6 rating to in Mint State. Census: 15 in 65, 3 finer (12/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
