1856-O 50C MS65 NGC. Doubled Date. WB-102. Although a relatively common issue in the post-1855 No Motto Seated Half Dollar series, the '56-O (2.6 million pieces produced) is scarcer than the 1858 and 1858-O. Of course, no O-mint Seated Half is common as a Gem, and the 1856-O is no exception. What's more, Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert (1993) assign the WB-102 die marriage a Low R.7 rating in Mint State. Repunching on the date is evident below the 18 and above the 56, although one will need to a loupe to discern these features. A loupe, however, does not reveal any abrasions that would call into question the validity of the MS65 designation. There is a veritable cornucopia of pastel-lilac, salmon-pink, blue-gray, and orange-russet toning over the frosty surfaces, and the strike is razor sharp in virtually all areas. A find for the advanced Seated Half Dollar collector. NGC reports just 14 1856-O Half Dollars of all die marriages in MS65, and there is only one coin finer (7/02).
