And for good reason. Only 2,250 pieces were struck, and of that number a paltry 15-20 coins are believed known today in all grades. Which is why it comes as such a surprise to us that we cannot trace the pedigree of this piece. This is not the Bass coin, not the Eliasberg piece, not the Dallas Bank piece, and Pittman did not have one. With a little more time and patience this coin should be traceable however, as it has several distinctive marks that should show up in even the poorest quality photo from years ago. A shallow vertical mark is located on the lower portion of Liberty's cheek, a scuff is seen to the left of the date, and a diagonal abrasion is seen across the vertical bars on the shield.
This should be a lower Condition Census example, with the five finest examples known being:

1. Ex: Amon Carter. MS60+.

2. Ex: Eliasberg, Bell, Atwater. AU55.

3. Ex: Stack's 11/89, Stack's 1/84. AU50.

4. Sotheby's 5/87, identifiable by a planchet flaw to the right of the date. XF45.

5. Ex: Stack's 1/86, possibly a repeat of #4 above. XF40.

Aside from the distinctive marks listed above, the coin has reddish-golden coloration with traces of prooflikeness still in evidence around the devices. Slight, even friction is seen over the highpoints with numerous small abrasions scattered about. This is a rare opportunity to acquire this classic American rarity.
From a Magnificent Collection of Double Eagles.

Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions

No Prior Data Recorded

<FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
