1856 N-5 R5- Italic 5 Proof-Only
1856 N-5 R5- Italic 5 Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown. Mint red mellowing to light steel brown with 75% of the red remaining, mostly on the obverse. The mirrors are deep, which is typical for this variety, although there are microscopic hairlines on the obverse. Defects include a nick-like planchet void (as struck) in the field over the bust tip, a tiny rim nick above star 3, a barely visible rim bruise just below star 2, and a small spot of darker toning in the field under star 4. The reverse is pristine except for a small carbon spot over the I in UNITED and another on the right top of the E in ONE. Great eye appeal in spite of the minor marks, and the abundant original mint red is a big plus. Called Proof-66 in the Del Bland census and Proof-64 tied for CC#3 by Denis Loring. Our grade is Proof-63, tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 in Proof-66 Red & Brown at PCGS. DWH #1873 (PCGS # 400608) .
Estimated Value $6,000-UP.
