1856 Know-Nothing Currier Lithograph. Millard Fillmore, our nation's last Whig president, switched allegiance to the American Party and, with politician Andrew Jackson Donelson, made a run for the White House on a nativist platform in 1856. More familiar as the Know Nothing's, the party was especially concerned with perceived foreign corruption of American values due to increased immigration to this country. Of special concern were the Irish since many native-born Protestants feared their presence was part of a vast Papal conspiracy to undermine our democracy. This Grand National American Banner shows both candidates amid flags and the American eagle. Overall 16" x 20" in later wooden frame. A few small edge splits with light scratches on portraits. Good condition.

Shipping: Framed (view shipping information)
