1856-D G$1 MS61 NGC. Winter 8-J, the only known dies. The Dahlonega Mint's entire delivery of 1,460 Gold Dollars in 1856 was achieved in the month of May. The 1856-D is one of the "Big Three" among D-mint Gold Dollars, and it is either the second or third rarest date depending upon whether one is judging by the total number of coins known or the number of coins extant above the XF grade level. Only two other Mint State examples have appeared at auction over the past ten years: 1. Ex: Reed Hawn Collection (Stack's, 10/1993), lot 890, where it realized $26,400. The coin was later graded MS61 by NGC, and it is the # 2 example in Winter's 1997 Condition Census listing. 2. Ex: Sotheby's sale of 10/1996, lot 12; 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale--The Chestatee Collection (Heritage, 8/1999), lot 7628, where it realized $27,600. An MS60 PCGS example. It is interesting to note at this juncture that, while Bowers' sale of the Harry Bass collection offered two 1856-D Gold Dollars, neither graded Mint State (one was an AU53, the other an AU55). In addition, the Eliasberg specimen graded AU50, and our February 1999 sale of the William Miller Collection featured two '56-D Gold Dollars, the finest of which graded "only" AU58. We do not know the pedigree of the present BU representative. Both sides exhibit color that alternates between green-gold, orange-gold, and yellow-gold hues depending on the light angle. The diagnostic raised segments (as struck) at the reverse border are evident, and there are also some die polish lines (as produced) in the field on that side. All 1856-D Gold Dollars are weakly impressed on the U in UNITED with a filled O in DOLLAR and a softly defined 5 in the date. The balance of the devices on the present example are relatively bold and, true to form for the date, this coin is more sharply struck than most survivors of the 1857-1861 D-mint issues in this series. An attractive coin for the grade with a moderately bright sheen. From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
