The remote San Francisco Mint produced Type Two gold dollars in 1856, but Dahlonega did not strike the denomination until the facility received three pairs of the new Type Three dies on April 5. Only one die pair was used, not too surprising since the mintage was a mere 1,460 pieces. This apricot-gold Borderline Uncirculated example is crisply struck for the issue, as only the U in UNITED, the O in DOLLAR, and the 5 in the date display softness. Light clash marks are noted near Liberty's profile, but the surfaces are only faintly marked. Luster illuminates the legends and devices. A significant opportunity for the Southern gold specialist. Population: 18 in 58, 9 finer (2/06).
